What Parents Can Do To Help Babies With High Myopia

As a parent, having a toddler, often at a age of 5 and below, with myopia or other eyesight problems and not knowing how to treat your child or help them cope with their vision problems can be quite tough. Thus, this article aims to educate parents about baby eye problems, specifically myopia, hyperopia, on its possible symptoms and identification and also as to how to improve child eye health.

Understanding Child Eye Problems

Some common eye problems that a child may have are myopia, hyperopia, squint and amblyopia, also commonly known as lazy eye.  Other known eye diseases for babies are retinal detachment and cataract; fortunately these are generally quite rare.

Myopia is a type of vision problem wherein objects that are close to you can be seen very clearly but things that are at a distance appear blurry.

Hyperopia is when they are not able to see objects within 2 feet clearly, but they are able to see far objects.

Squint would be when both eyes are not able to focus normally on the same object.

Wherelse amblyopia is a visual development problem arising from an existing visual problem such as one of those listed above.  Amblyopia especially are easier treated when the toddler is below the age of 5, and becomes more and more difficult to treat, hence it is very important that diagnosis and treatment be administered as soon as possible for best recovery results.

Some of the possible reasons of babies having such eyesight problems are hereditary, genetics, premature birth resulting in poor development of their visual system or even poor nutrition.

Although poor environment or habits such as poor lighting conditions, or even excessive near sight activity such as improper TV watching habit may be a cause of visual problems, it is generally not likely to cause serious eyesight trouble for toddlers below the age of 5.

Spotting Babies with Visual Problems

Children, especially toddlers are unable to tell their parents that they have trouble seeing clearly. In fact, they may not even know that they have any vision problems. Therefore, you need to observe your child to see whether they exhibit any signs of having baby eye problems. Here are the signs or symptoms to watch out for:

  •  Not being able to focus properly, or show disinterest on objects that are at a distance of six meters and more;
  • Tendency to move closer to things in order to have a better look, for example when watching TV;
  •  Frequent complaints about headaches or strain on the eyes;
  • Showing irritation when asked to do near work such as reading or drawing;
  • Habitually tilting their face to the same one side when  watching TV or talking to you;
  •  Straying of one eye to the side

If your toddler shows any of the above signs, it is likely that you have a toddler with vision problem on your hands. In such a case, you should consult with an eye doctor immediately and get your baby’s eyes checked. Even if the doctor gives your baby a clean bill of eye health, it is best to get your child’s eyes checked every two years in order to ensure optimum child eye health.

Treating Child Visual Problems

Baby eye are usually corrected and treating in the following ways:

  1. Eye glasses: Glasses are the easiest, cheapest, and most convenient way to treat a toddler with myopia or hyperopia. Glasses improve a child’s vision but will probably not help to slow down the progression of child myopia.  As for hyperopia, there is a good chance that it will disappear with the growth of the child.
  2. Contact Lenses: Contact lenses can also be used to correct myopia. However, doctors will not prescribe contact lenses for children less than 12-13 years of age, as they are not considered old enough to wear, handle, and maintain their lenses properly. Thus, if your baby is a toddler or an infant, glasses may be your only option.

  3. Visual Therapy: For children with problems of squint, they may be asked to perform eye exercises.  This is difficult as we are often not able to get the cooperation of the children.  Eye therapy devices such as EyeRelax are often using to aid this process.

For serious visual problems such as cataract or even squint, it may be necessary to undergo surgery

It is important to follow the corrective prescription by your eyecare professionals as this is important to ensure that the babies’ visual problems do not worsen.
