Take Visual Breaks and Focus Far Regularly Our eyes tire easily when we do near work. Take a vision break of 3 to 5 minutes after every 30 to 40 minutes of near work, such as reading, using computer, watching television programmes (make use of the commercial breaks). The preferred visual break is to focus far. When we focus far, our eyes do not need to accommodate, thus allowing our eye’s ciliary muscles to relax.
We can easily focus far by looking out of the window. Just by focusing on the opposite building, people or vehicles on the road, street lamps or just enjoy Singapore’s plentiful greeneries. Focus far with your naked eyes without spectacles. Do not strain your eyes to try to see the images clearly. Focus far for 3 to 5 minutes and you will realise that your eyes are considerably less tired thereafter.

Exercise regularly and have adequate sleep at night.
Practise Good Reading Habits
While reading, sit in an upright position in a comfortable chair and the height of the table and chair should be adequate. The reading environment should be well-lit and the distance between the eyes and the book should be approximately 30 cm.
When watching television programmes, ensure height of television screen is at or below eye level, switch on the room light and sit at least 2 metres away.
Appropriate Use of Computers
Modern lifestyle revolves very much around computers, whether it is for school work, leisure or work. We should maintain a distance of at least 50 cm from the monitor to our eyes. Position the monitor to avoid glare from other sources of light, use bigger fonts, and bigger monitors to help reduce the stress on our eyes. Take regular visual rest, and more importantly, avoid engaging in excessive computer gaming which is extremely visually demanding on our eyes.
Moderate the Use of Handheld Games
Handheld games are very entertaining, and captivating. Being handy and convenient, it is no wonder that most children spend more time than they should with them. You can often see children playing in moving vehicles, while walking or even while waiting in queues. Being small and engaging, it requires much visual attention and is extremely stressful to our eyes. Parents are strongly encouraged to prevent their children from engaging excessively in handheld games.
Engaged in More Outdoors Activities
Engaging in outdoor activities is the most natural way for our eyes to relax, and more importantly, keep our body, mind and soul healthy and fit. Encourage more outdoor activities such as sports, exercise or just a simple walk in the park, instead of playing with computer games or handheld games.
